How it is calculated
- Random bytes come from Web Crypto, the browser’s cryptographic generator.
- v4: 122 random bits. v7: the first 48 bits hold the Unix time in milliseconds, the rest is random.
- Version and variant bits follow RFC 9562.
Example
Sample v4: 3f1c9a52-7b4e-4d2a-9c61-0e8f5b7a2d14.
Good to know
- A v7 UUID reveals when it was created.
- Identifiers are generated locally and stored nowhere.
When to use it
- Create identifiers for database records or application objects.
- Choose random v4 UUIDs or time-sortable v7 UUIDs for your workflow.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between UUID v4 and v7?
v4 is random. v7 includes time information, which makes chronological sorting easier.
Is a UUID guaranteed to be unique?
The chance of a collision is extremely small, but no UUID standard gives an absolute mathematical guarantee.
Are generated UUIDs sent or saved anywhere?
No. They are generated in your browser and are not sent to a server.
