How it is calculated
- Mean = sum of the values ÷ number of values.
- Median: sort the list and take the middle value (or the average of the two middle ones).
- Mode: the value that appears most often. When several are tied, all are shown.
- Range = largest value − smallest value.
Example
3, 7, 7, 2, 9, 3, 5: sorted 2, 3, 3, 5, 7, 7, 9; mean ≈ 5.142857; median 5; modes 3 and 7 (twice each); range 7.
Good to know
- If every value appears equally often, there is no mode.
- An empty list has no mean or median: type at least one number.
- The mean is pulled by extreme values; the median much less.
