Detailed table
| Year | Book value | Depreciation for the year |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 6,000.00 | 4,000.00 |
| 2 | 3,600.00 | 2,400.00 |
| 3 | 2,160.00 | 1,440.00 |
| 4 | 1,296.00 | 864.00 |
| 5 | 1,000.00 | 296.00 |
How it is calculated
- Straight-line: (cost − salvage) ÷ life, every year.
- Declining balance: book value × rate ÷ life, switching to straight-line when that is higher, never going below salvage.
- Sum of years’ digits: (cost − salvage) × remaining years ÷ (1 + 2 + … + life).
Example
A 10,000 asset, 1,000 salvage, 5 years, 200% declining balance: 4,000 in year 1, then 2,400, 1,440, 864 and 296. Total depreciation 9,000.
Good to know
- Accounting depreciation, not a tax deduction: tax rules (US MACRS, other countries’ schedules) differ.
- Full years only, with no first-year proration.
