Mulch calculator
Type the bed area, the depth you want and the size of a bag: you get the mulch volume and the number of bags.
Result
2.205 m³Mulch volume
- In liters
- 2,205 L
- Bags to buy
- 45
Inputs
- Area to mulch
- 30
- Depth
- 7
- Bag size
- 50
- Margin (settling, losses)
- 5
How it is calculated
Volume = area × depth (in m) × (1 + margin).
Result
Mulch volume
- In liters
- 2,205 L
- Bags to buy
- 45
How it is calculated
- Volume = area × depth (in m) × (1 + margin).
- 1 m³ = 1,000 liters. Bags = liters ÷ bag size, rounded up.
Example
30 m² at 7 cm with a 5 % margin: 30 × 0.07 × 1.05 = 2.205 m³, so 2,205 L or 45 bags of 50 L.
Good to know
- Usual depths: 5 to 10 cm for bark, more for straw, which settles fast.
- Bag volume is measured loose: mulch settles a little once spread.
