How it is calculated
- Energy per day (kWh) = power (W) × hours × number of appliances ÷ 1,000.
- Cost = energy × price per kWh.
Example
A 2,000 W appliance used 1.5 h a day for 30 days: 3 kWh a day, 90 kWh, so 22.50 at 0.25 per kWh (0.75 a day, 273.75 a year).
Good to know
- The label power is often a maximum: a fridge or a heater with a thermostat uses less on average.
- Standing charges, taxes and off-peak rates are not included: use your average price per kWh.
