Long division calculator with steps
Enter two whole numbers. The division is done as at school: bring the digits down one by one, then carry on after the decimal point if you want.
Result
176Whole quotient
- Remainder
- 2
- Check: 1234 = 7 × 176 + 2.
- Decimal quotient
- 176.285…
- Written with the repeating block in brackets

- How many times does 7 go into 12? 1 times: 1 × 7 = 7, remainder 5.
- How many times does 7 go into 53? 7 times: 7 × 7 = 49, remainder 4.
- How many times does 7 go into 44? 6 times: 6 × 7 = 42, remainder 2.
- After the point, bring down a 0: 20 ÷ 7 = 2, 2 × 7 = 14, remainder 6.
- After the point, bring down a 0: 60 ÷ 7 = 8, 8 × 7 = 56, remainder 4.
- After the point, bring down a 0: 40 ÷ 7 = 5, 5 × 7 = 35, remainder 5.
Inputs
- Dividend (number to divide)
- 1234
- Divisor
- 7
- Digits after the decimal point
- 3
How it is calculated
Take the first digits of the dividend until the number is at least the divisor.

- Decimal quotient

- Written with the repeating block in brackets
- 176.(285714)
How it is calculated
- Take the first digits of the dividend until the number is at least the divisor.
- Find how many times the divisor fits, subtract the product, then bring down the next digit.
- After the last digit, add zeros to get the decimals.
- When a remainder comes back, the digits repeat: that is the repeating block.
Example
1234 ÷ 7: quotient 176, remainder 2 (1234 = 7 × 176 + 2). With 3 decimals: 176.285…; the repeating block is 285714.
Good to know
- Whole numbers from 0 up to 10¹⁵. The divisor cannot be 0.
- At most 20 steps after the decimal point are shown.
