Exponent written as
Number
Exponent
10

How it is calculated

a^n = a × a × … × a (n times) when n is a positive whole number.

Result

Result

1,024
In scientific notation
1.024 × 10³

How it is calculated

  1. a^n = a × a × … × a (n times) when n is a positive whole number.
  2. a^(−n) = 1 ÷ a^n.
  3. a^(p/q) = (q-th root of a)^p.
  4. A negative base with a non-whole exponent only has a real result when q is odd.

Example

2^10 = 1,024, that is 1.024 × 10³.

Good to know

  • Computed with decimal numbers (about 15 exact digits). For very long exact results, use the big number calculator.
  • Above about 10^308 the result is too large and refused. 0 with a negative exponent is refused (division by zero).
  • Negative base with a non-whole decimal exponent: no real result. Write the exponent as a fraction p/q.
