Time value of money calculator (PV, FV, rate, periods, payment)

Like a financial calculator: choose what you are looking for and fill in the rest. Sign convention: money you pay out is negative, money you receive is positive.

Time value of money calculator (PV, FV, rate, periods, payment)

Inputs

I am looking for
FV
Present value (PV)
-10000
Payment each period
-100
Nominal rate per year
5
Total number of periods
120
Periods per year
Every month
Payments made at the
End of each period

How it is calculated

Equation used: PV × (1 + i)^n + PMT × (1 + i × t) × ((1 + i)^n − 1) ÷ i + FV = 0.

Result

Future value (FV)

31,998.32
Rate per period
0.4167%

How it is calculated

  1. Equation used: PV × (1 + i)^n + PMT × (1 + i × t) × ((1 + i)^n − 1) ÷ i + FV = 0.
  2. i = yearly rate ÷ periods per year; t = 1 for payments at the start of each period, else 0.
  3. PV, FV and payment are solved directly; periods with a logarithm; the rate by a numeric search.
  4. Signs matter: if everything has the same sign, there is no solution.

Example

You pay 10,000 today (−10,000) then 100 at the end of each month (−100), at 5% a year for 120 months: the future value is 31,998.32.

Good to know

  • Constant rate for the whole length.
  • Equal, regular payments at the same rhythm as interest.
