How it is calculated
- 2026 limit: 7,500 USD a year, 8,600 USD from age 50.
- 2026 Roth income phase-out: 153,000 to 168,000 USD (single), 242,000 to 252,000 USD (joint).
- Each year: balance × (1 + return) + contribution.
- Traditional IRA = balance × (1 − retirement tax) + today’s tax saving, reinvested at the same return.
Example
With the same tax rate today and in retirement, the Roth and the traditional IRA give the same amount.
Good to know
- US rules, 2026 limits kept the same: they change each year.
- The traditional IRA deduction can be limited if you have a workplace retirement plan.
- Gains on the reinvested tax saving are assumed tax-free: a simplification.
