How it is calculated
- Rate per period i = yearly rate ÷ payments per year (nominal rate).
- Payment = P × i ÷ (1 − (1 + i)^−n).
- With a given payment, we repay down to 0; the last payment is smaller.
- Dates move by 1, 3, 6 or 12 months, or by 7 or 14 days.
Example
30,000 at 5% over 5 years, paid every quarter: 20 payments of about 1,721.24.
Good to know
- Nominal rate: some lenders use an equivalent rate, slightly different.
- Holidays and weekends do not shift the dates.
