How it is calculated
- Each month: balance × (1 + rate ÷ 12), then the deposit is added.
- After each full year, the deposit is multiplied by (1 + raise).
- Today’s money = final amount ÷ (1 + inflation)^years.
Example
1,000 to start, 100 a month raised by 3% a year, at 4% for 20 years: 49,611.49 at the end, or 33,387.11 in today’s money with 2% inflation.
Good to know
- The nominal rate and inflation are different things: the rate grows the amount, inflation cuts what it can buy.
- Constant rate and inflation, no tax or fees.
