How it is calculated
- i = rate ÷ withdrawals per year. Withdrawal that uses up the savings in n periods: W = C × i ÷ (1 − (1 + i)^−n).
- With a 0 rate: W = C ÷ n.
- Length: we withdraw period after period until the savings are 0; the last withdrawal is smaller.
- If the withdrawal is not above one period of interest (C × i), the savings never go down: this is flagged.
Example
100,000 invested at 3%: to use it all up in 20 years, monthly, you can withdraw 554.60 a month, 133,103.42 in total.
Good to know
- Constant rate and fixed withdrawals at the end of each period, no inflation, tax or fees.
- This is not a life annuity: the money stops at the computed date, whatever your age.
