Density calculator
Weigh the object and measure its volume: you get its density in kg/m³ and g/cm³, and its specific gravity compared with water.
Result
1,250 kg/m³Density
- In grams per cm³
- 1.25 g/cm³
- Specific gravity (compared with water, no unit)
- 1.25
Inputs
- Mass
- 500
- Mass unit
- grams (g)
- Volume
- 400
- Volume unit
- milliliters (mL)
How it is calculated
Density ρ = mass ÷ volume, after converting to kilograms and cubic meters.
Result
Density
- In grams per cm³
- 1.25 g/cm³
- Specific gravity (compared with water, no unit)
- 1.25
How it is calculated
- Density ρ = mass ÷ volume, after converting to kilograms and cubic meters.
- 1 g/cm³ = 1,000 kg/m³; 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg; 1 mL = 1 cm³.
- Specific gravity = ρ ÷ density of water at 4 °C (999.97 kg/m³). It has no unit.
Example
500 g in 400 mL: ρ = 0.5 kg ÷ 0.0004 m³ = 1,250 kg/m³, so 1.25 g/cm³ and a specific gravity of about 1.25.
Good to know
- Density changes with temperature (and with pressure for gases).
- Do not mix up density (with a unit) and specific gravity (no unit).
